Vonwik on Firestick

The Fire TV Stick is the device most Vonwik customers use. The whole install takes about five minutes with the remote and needs no computer.

Step 1: allow apps from outside the Amazon store

1. From the home screen go to Settings (the gear on the right), then My Fire TV.
2. Open Developer options. If it is missing, open About, highlight the device name and press the select button seven times; Developer options appears under My Fire TV.
3. Choose Install unknown apps and switch it on for Downloader (install Downloader first if it is not listed yet, see step 2, then come back).

Step 2: install Downloader

1. Go back to the home screen and open the search (magnifier) at the top left.
2. Type Downloader, pick the orange app by AFTVnews, and press Get.

Step 3: download and install the player

1. Open Downloader. Allow it to access files when asked.
2. In the address box type vonwik.tv/smarters and press Go.
3. The 15.8 MB file downloads in a few seconds. Press Install.
4. Press Open. When Downloader offers to delete the file, choose Delete; the app stays installed.

Step 4: log in

1. Tap Login with Xtream Codes API.
2. Any name in the first box. Then your username, password and the server URL with its port from your Vonwik access email.
3. Tap Add user. The channel list loads once; after that the app opens straight to your profile.

Type the details on the remote rather than pasting from a phone keyboard app; pasted text often carries a hidden space. All login errors are explained on the login page.

Make it the home-screen app

Hold the home button on the remote for two seconds, choose Apps, and move the player to the first row. Fire TV also lets you pin it under Settings, Applications, Manage installed applications.

Common Firestick problems

• “Install unknown apps” is greyed out: a parental PIN or a Kids profile is active. Switch to the adult profile.
• Downloader says “page not found”: you typed a space or “www”. Clear the box and type vonwik.tv/smarters again.
• App installs but shows a black screen: the stick is out of memory. Settings, Applications, Manage installed applications, then Force stop and Clear cache on the big apps, and restart the stick.
• Buffering on 4K: move the stick off the back of the TV with the included HDMI extender, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or pick the HD stream of the channel.
